A complex word. A word that demands our attention. A word that causes us to question who we are, and who we want to become. Though all of us have an Identity, many of us hide from it. We don’t like what we see in the mirror; we don’t like who we are (or who we’re becoming).
We look to culture to define us. We look to religion to define us. We look to others … music … drugs … sex … etc., to define what our “true” Identity is. Yet, none of those things bring us to a point of satisfaction – because none of those outlets honestly show us who we are. Yes, we may like doing certain things, and we may find pleasure in doing them, but the things we do are not who we are. The things we wear, listen to, read, and befriend, do not define who we really are.
The true source for discovering our Identity is found only within the Father. Think about it. If He is the One who has created us, shouldn’t He be the only One to define us? No matter what we get ourselves into, or dress ourselves as, underneath everything, we still belong to the Father – we’re still His kids.
Finding ourselves in Him … taking what He says about us, and putting on these truths … is the only way we are going to find who we truly are in life. Our Identity isn’t a secret. It’s known. Therefore, we need to start living it out.
Below are just some of the everlasting promises God has given to us. Read them. Know them. Live within their truth!
