Porn in the USA.

Here’s an article I received today from Youth Specialties, talking about the growth of porn within the US.  It seems that it’s not liberals who are helping the porn industry rise, but rather it’s the conservatives.  Here’s a brief section of the article (with a full link following).

Americans may paint themselves in increasingly bright shades of red and blue, but new research finds one thing that varies little across the nation: the liking for online pornography.

A new nationwide study (pdf) of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states.

“When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different,” says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.

However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.

  1. I couldn’t believe this when I saw it! (Hence, it had to go in the YS Update.) I’d love to see some reasons you thought this to be true.

  2. To clarify… do you think there are any reasons why these statistics are true? Why are conservatives consuming more porn than liberals?

  3. Gotcha.

There are several reasons why I think this is true, but I would say the top reason is because of Christianities hypocrisy gets the best of us.

Think about: online porn is a safe way to sin and not get caught – in most cases anyway. And if Christians are able to get away with doing ‘secret sins’ then they don’t have to worry about coming clean to anyone – especially themselves.

Those who don’t follow the Bible (believe it, etc) have no conviction or quilt of doing sin … so while the lure of looking at porn is still enticing, it’s not a guilty pleasure. Whereas for the Christian, it is.

Let’s be honest … aren’t Christians more attracted to do things we ought not to do rather than the things we ought to do? Kinda like flies being attracted to fly paper. You would think by now they would have gotten a clue to stay away from that stuff. Christians are no different.

This article just shows how human Christians are. And how much we are ALL in need of the saving grace and strength of JESUS CHRIST.

  4. Shawn, completely agree. I would also add that I think some of this statistic has to do with a lack of education. I think if more Christians knew that lots of porn wasn’t coming from willing participants in the US but from those sexually trafficked… they not be so quick to indulge. The fact is that their sin is helping thousands of boys and girls get kidnapped every year from the powerless and forced into the sex trade. So I think that their “secret sin” has real ramifications!

    • I totally agree Adam – great point. Why do we condone something that we should be appalled at … cause you know JESUS is.
