Culture and Theology: Homosexuality (Matt Chandler)

This past weekend, I watched an awesome sermon given by Matt Chandler concerning homosexuality. This isn’t your regular run-of-the-mill homosexuality talk Chandler is open, straight-forward, and definitely biblical, but he also is compassionate and genuine about his love and ministry to gays and lesbians – Christian and non-Christian alike.  In fact, Matt holds nothing back when he “scolds” pastors for making fun of gays, with jokes and stereotypes, or when they try to define “real-men” as hunters and sports fanatics.

The guy is real.  His message is thought-provoking and compassionate.  It definitely raises the bar on sermons about homosexuality … hopefully other pastors will tune in and follow suite.

Below are the three videos.  Combined, they are about 2 hours long; so I suggest you bookmark this page and come back to view them when you have time.  In the first video, Matt addresses the issue of homosexuality from a biblical perspective using Genesis 2 and Romans 1Next, Matt tackles 7 common arguments made for homosexuality, and what the churches response should be towards the GLBT community.  Finally, in the third video, Matt answers some questions that have been sent in by the audience, via text, while he preached.

I’m sure many questions will arise throughout the videos, so be sure to add them and your thoughts below.  I will make my comments in the next couple of days, as I take a look at each video by itself.

  1. Matt Chandler expresses things very well. I think his responses in the second video to the pro-gay arguments would need to be developed a bit more in an actual conversation, but they are a good summary. The first and third videos are excellent.

    • I was really impressed with his responses as well. And, I agree, the second video needs to be expounded on more, though I know he was being timed. Still, a worthwhile series to go through, learn from, and talk about – with both gay and straight Christians / Non-Christians.

  4. Thanks Shawn for sharing this video. This is definitely one of the better presentations I’ve seen in a long time on this subject. I will recommend and link to this post (and one of your posts about youth ministry) in my next blog post about how the church can respond to SSA and the LGBT community. Keep up the great work!
